Arsene Wenger has revealed that his biggest regret has been not signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar has revealed that he has been on the verge of joining the Gunners back in 2003 before initially moving to their direct Premier League rivals Manchester United.
Playing for Sporting Lisbon at the time in Portugal, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has joined Manchester United in a £13m deal.
During his time at Old Trafford, Portuguese forward has won eight trophies in six years before making then a world-record move to Real Madrid.
And since that move, he has been established himself arguably one of the best players ever played football.
Wenger has insisted had he joined the Gunners. Instead, the fortunes of his club would have been very different.
When asked in a Q&A with Arsenal fans to name the one player he wished he had signed for Arsenal, Wenger replied: “I nearly signed Ronaldo and I think that would have changed the history of Arsenal Football Club.
“The Ronaldo story was very, very close.”
Ronaldo has won five Ballon d’Or’s and has been on the verge to win his sixth after scoring 15-goals in 12 Champions League games.
