Sky Sports Pundit, Paul Merson slammed Arsenal decision to sign Shkodran Mustafi.
Former Arsenal star is believed that if German defender was any good Gary Neville would have recommended him to Manchester United.
Manchester United former defender Gary Neville managed Mustafi during his time at Valencia before German centre-back made a switch to Emirates Stadium.
Neville lasted just four months at the Los Ches during the 2015/16 campaign and has since vowed to never return to a managerial job.
At the end of that season, the Gunners signed Germany international centre-back for a fee of £35million.
He has struggled during his time at the Emirates and looked terrible in both 3-0 defeats against Manchester City.
Merson is not surprised Mustafi’s struggles in the English top tier because he reckons Neville would have recommended him to his former team if he was any good.
“They paid £35m for him,” Merson said.
“If he was any good, Gary Neville would have gone to Man United ‘I’ve got this lad at Valencia, he’s a centre-half, he is unbelievable, you’ve got to go and get him’.”
Mustafi has made 24 appearances for the Gunners this campaign, scoring two goals in te process. However, his defensive errors cost the Gunners the Carabao Cup title.
