Arsenal are reportedly planning a somewhat surprising transfer move for a young German shot-stopper who’s set to become a free agent in the summer.
According to Bild, the north Londoners are keen on potentially snapping up 20-year-old star Markus Schubert to replace outgoing keeper Petr Cech as back-up to Bernd Leno next campaign.
Cech will be retiring at the end of this season and Sky Sports state he’ll be returning to former team Chelsea as sporting director.
The Gunners could benefit from landing Schubert, who will arrive on cheap and therefore low-risk acquisition for them with the potential to become better in the future.
As Bild report, the young shot-stopper is out of contract with German outfit Dynamo Dresden at the end of this campaign, so would be free to make his way to the North London.
Gunners fans will no doubt be hoping Arsenal can succeed in tempting in bigger names than this in the coming weeks, with the club finishing outside of the EPL top four for a third campaign in a row and in real need of bolstering.
Meantime, Samuel Umtiti is reportedly not interested in speculation linking him with a transfer to Arsenal as he is keen to stay and fight for his place at Barcelona.
The Gunners have been repeatedly connected with the France international Umtiti during the past year, as have Premier League rivals Manchester United, but Mundo Deportivo reports that the central defender would prefer to stick around at Blaugrana for another year.
