Man Utd summer signing Harry Maguire impressed against Chelsea and is already being compared to Liverpool’s centre-back Virgil van Dijk who has been named as a favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.
Former Manchester United star Jonny Evans believes Harry Maguire arrival at Old Trafford could have the same impact as Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.
Van Dijk since his transfer from Southampton has established himself as a key player to Liverpool challenging for the title and claiming the Champions League trophy last campaign after his £75million move from the Saints and Evans believes Maguire can have the same impact at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils broke the world-record fee for a defender spending £80million on the ex-Leicester City man and he has already started to show his worth helping beat Chelsea 4-0 on Sunday. And former Man Utd defender Evans, who won three Premier League titles with the 20-times English champions before moving to West Brom, believes Maguire could have the same impact as his Liverpool rival.
“You can see comparisons in their games (Maguire and Van Dijk), both are great on the ball, and Harry has got explosive pace people don’t see,” Evans told Press Association.
“He is powerful, good in the air…Everyone will compare the transfer fees but it’s so difficult to judge transfer fees nowadays.
“We are all human and it is weird we get traded for money. In the transfer market it’s all supply and demand and things can go up and down at any moment.
“The most important thing is for him to be judged on how he plays. I don’t have any worries about him there.
“He is tailor-made for Man United, it was a great move for him. He’s a player they needed. He’s got a really likeable nature about him. He will be a real hit there, he is a fantastic player.”
