Man Utd could make a shock last-minute offer to secure services of French forward Ousmane Dembele who has emerged as a top target for Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
The Barcelona winger has been strongly linked with a move to the North London club, in a deal thought to be worth around £100m.
The 21-year-old sent the Gunners supporters into meltdown last week after a photo emerged of him with several first-team players.
Speculation was then heightened after the French attacker returned to pre-season in Spain early.
However, the interest from the Gunners may be made worthless if Jose Mourinho decides to sign him.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has revealed that Dembele could be the marquee signing Man Utd need this summer to compete for the trophies.
He told Starsport exclusively: “The two Manchester clubs will be interested in him too.
“Mourinho is very unhappy in terms of United’s recruitment so far.
“I think most United fans saw the signing of Fred as solid, but very much treading water.
“If they want something to wet the appetite, then someone like Dembele could do that – and they can certainly afford him.”
