Manchester United are reportedly ready to make Raphael Varane the most expensive defender in the world as the club go all out to sign the Real Madrid centre-half.
Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho was left frustrated by chief executive Ed Woodward’s failure to bolster in that position during the summer transfer window.
Jerome Boateng, Yerry Mina, Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld were all rumoured to be on Manchester United’s radar, but they were not able to get a deal over the line for any of their reported targets.
According to the London Evening Standard, however, Ed will give Jose the financial backing he is after next year by doubling up on his attempts to bring in Varane, who has worked with the Portuguese tactician in the past.
The France international star will likely cost more than £75 million – the sum Liverpool paid Southampton to land Dutch central defender Virgil van Dijk earlier this year – and even then Real Madrid are reluctant to sell.
Toby Alderweireld and Inter Milan’s key defender Milan Skriniar are said to remain back-up options for the club.
