Man Utd long-term target set to sign new deal with Serie A giants

Manchester United’s recruitment drive has dealt a blow following reports that midfield target Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is closing in on a bumper fresh contract at SS Lazio.

The 24-year-old star has been on United’s radar for a while and the Red Devils were believed to be lining the player up as a possible summer replacement for France international Paul Pogba, who was wanted by Real Madrid.

It is said that Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Juventus have also been keeping tabs on Segej’s situation but SS Lazio have now stepped up their interest to offer him fresh terms.

According to a report from Il Messaggero, Sergej is in line for an increased salary and hefty €100m-plus exit clause.

It is also reported that the extension would only be for another 12 months as the star’s current contract is set to run until June 2023.

He will be in line for hefty add-ons should he commit to the performance-based agreement which includes extra money for assists and goals.

The club president Claudio Lotito had previously revealed that they’d be open to the sale of their prized asset  – if they receive an official offer that meets their valuation.

However, the star ultimately remained at the Stadio Olimpico and later admitted that a transfer to Old Trafford was never on the cards.

Sergej said: “I never said I wanted to leave Lazio, I feel good here. I never mentioned a possible transfer to Manchester United and it was just paper talk. New commitments await me with Lazio.”
