Tottenham Hotspur reportedly offered £45 million for Ajax’s Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong in the summer but EPL rivals Manchester United allegedly want him, too.
Spurs failed to sign a single player in the summer transfer window, but it looks like they are prepared to break their own transfer record in 2019.
According to the Mail, Mauricio Pochettino’s side saw a £45 million offer for Ajax midfielder de Jong knocked back in the summer.
But the North London outfit are understood to have retained an interest, with Mundo Deportivo stating Spurs could even make another bid in January, with coach Mauricio Pochettino a huge fan of the 21-year-old.
Barcelona’s strong interest has been well documented. But it looks like Spurs are now facing competition from Manchester United, too.
According to the Mail, Jose Mourinho’s team sent scouts to watch De Jong in action during his country’s recent 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to France, with the Red Devils keen to bolster their squad in January.
And the Old Trafford outfit are confident that their relationship with Eredivisie giants chief executive officer, who happens to be their 2008 Champions League winning ‘keeper Edwin Van der Sar, will help them seal a deal for Frenkie de Jong.
