Red Devils first discussed the possibility of signing Sporting Lisbon youngster Nuno Mendes when they landed Bruno Fernandes in winter. The two clubs were locked in talks over Man United star throughout the festive period, with Fernandes finally arriving in the winter window.
But Red Devils now want to add another Portuguese talent to their ranks under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Mendes, 17, a quick, attacking full-back with good dribbling skills, is regarded as one of the pearls of Portugal.
And it turns out his name initially came up in talks between the two clubs when Man United signed Bruno Fernandes from Sporting but was ultimately not included in the deal. The Norwegian manager wants to sign new footballers during the summer transfer window.
Now, Red Devils are back in for him with a package worth over £10m being discussed, and the player keen to move. Nuno is out of contract in 2021 and has refused to sign the new two-year offer Sporting made him because he wants to explore his options.
Clubs in Italy and Spain are also said to be interested in the full-back. And Sporting president Frederico Varandes has already confirmed he has been approached for Nuno’s services.
