According to the reports, Liverpool almost secured services of Chelsea full-back Emerson Palmieri instead of Andrew Robertson back in 2017.
After an £8million switch from Hull City Robertson has blossomed into one of the best flank defenders in the world under Jurgen Klopp.
Robertson is already a fan favourite at Liverpool after playing a vital role in the defensive transformation which led to the Merseyside Reds claiming the Champions League trophy last campaign.
However, the Athletic claim the Merseyside Reds were closely tracking Brazilian-born Italy international defender in 2017 as they considered the Emerson as an alternative option to Robertson.
Now at Stamford Bridge, Emerson has pushed Marcos Alonso from the starting XI and is considered one of the most consistent performers in Lampard’s starting XI.
The Merseyside Reds were drawn to Emerson as they searched for a player capable of finally cementing a place in their left-back position.
Emerson was an emerging star at Serie A giants, AS Roma and had become a regular starter when Mario Rui suffered with the ACL injury back in 2016.
However, the same serious injury then struck Emerson on the final day of the 2016/17 campaign and the Reds focused their efforts on luring Robertson at Anfield from Hull City.
Emerson would secure the services for Chelsea in the summer of 2018 in a contract worth almost £18m, however, would take 18 months to nail down a regular starting role.
The 25-year-old is yet to miss a minute this campaign for the Frank Lampard’s side.
