Jurgen Klopp attempted to sign Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell back in 2016, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The new England international was coming off the back of a season on loan at Huddersfield Town and was recommended to German specialist by Terriers boss David Wagner.

The Reds saw the 21-year-old as long-term competition for Alberto Moreno on the left flank of the defence and made a bid of £5 million plus £2 million in add-ons, which was turned down.

It is believed the Reds were priced out of a move by the Foxes, however, and would go on to sign incumbent Andy Robertson from Hull City a year later.

It would have been interesting to have seen Ben Chilwell’s development under Jurgen Klopp, but he has done alright for himself at Leicester without the German’s guiding touch.

Andrew Robertson, on the other hand, has made the left back position his own at Anfield and become Scotland skipper in the process.

There likely won’t be many Liverpool supporters upset that they did not secure the Englishman’s signature, as his compatriot defender has made them forget about their past troubles at left back.
