Former Liverpool skipper Phil Thompson has urged the Reds to re-sign Philippe Coutinho back to the team in the summer transfer window.
The South American forward has endured a wretched time of things since his transfer to Nou Camp, failing to meet the huge expectations that the fans of Barcelona had.
Despite founding back of the net a respectable 21 times in 74 appearences since joining them back in January 2018, his all-round performances have been lacking and could be out from Nou Camp after the end of the current campaign.
Brazil international forward may now be sold by the Catalan club at the end of the current campaign, especially after two poor displays against his former team Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final.
Somebody who would love to see him back at Liverpool is Thompson, who told Sky Sports News that he is used on a different role.
“I would take him back in a heartbeat, but it would have to be now. You don’t want to leave it another 12 months, I think he still has the ability.
“He’s suffered at Barcelona. We’ve seen him playing out wide on the left, but he’s not Neymar.
“He likes to be in the middle where he can pull strings and is getting on the ball to hurt teams.
“He doesn’t do that and he’s not a left-winger and that’s where he’s playing at Barcelona; they don’t love him like Liverpool loved him.”
In truth, it is tough to see Brazilian midfielder returning to the Merseyside Reds, with Jurgen Klopp unlikely to be keen on to re-sign him.
It feels like a chapter in the Merseyside Reds’ history that has been and gone, with the team likely to bring in other faces instead of him when the summer transfer window will be re-opened.
Red Bull Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff claimed that Liverpool are still in the transfer race to secure services of Timo Werner as the forward may want to ‘perform under Jurgen Klopp’.
German champions Bayern Munich are believed to be keen on securing the services of 23-year-old forward and view him as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
The German international has managed to found back of the net 16 times in 30 appearences for Leipzig this season and providing seven assists in another eye-catching season.
Bundesliga outfits are guaranteed a place in next year’s Champions League, however, that’s unlikely to be enough in order to keep 23-year-old forward at Red Bull Arena.
However, while a move to Bayern Munich appeared to be close, Mintzlaff has placed doubt over Werner’s possible move ot Allianz Arena claiming that other teams still have the chance to negotiate with the 23-year-old attacker.
‘We haven’t spoken to Timo Werner about Bayern Munich, but what the player wanted to do was important for us as he wanted to see how the season would go,’ Mintzlaff told Sky Sports.
‘Last year we certainly didn’t play football like we did in the season before.
‘We have submitted an offer and we know that Timo would rather not extend – but that can still change.
‘Maybe he doesn’t even want to go to Munich. Maybe he wants to go to [Thomas] Tuchel in Paris or, I have no idea, maybe to Jurgen Klopp [at Liverpool] or Lucien Favre [at Dortmund].’
La Liga outfits Celta Vigo’s forward Maxi Gomez could be on his way to Liverpool this summer, as the Reds are reportedly poised to meet the release clause of 22-year-old forward.
The Uruguay international forward was rumoured with a move to West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool back in January, though Celta Vigo were keen to keep hold of their star forward until the end of the campaign as they attempt to avoid relegation from the Spanish top-tier.
The 22-year-old has found back of the net 13 times in La Liga this campaign and the Merseyside Reds are believed to be ready to meet his £43million release clause in the summer according to The Guardian reports.
West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur are also prepared to match his release clause, as they are determined to win the race for his signature.
Celta Vigo will almost certainly lose the Uruguayan forward if they are relegated from the La Liga this campaign, and they currently find themselves just three points clear of the safe zone with one game has been left in the Spanish top-tier.
Meanwhile, Arsenal have reportedly joined direct Premier League rivals Liverpool in the race to secure services of Borussia Monchengladbach attacking midfielder Thorgan Hazard this summer’s transfer window.
The 25-year-old attacker who is the brother of the Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard has found back of the net 12 times and provided 11 assists in 31 games for Gladbach this campaign.
Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool have both been heavily linked with securing the Belgium international star.
