Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Paulo Dybala forced Manchester United to pull out of the race to secure his services, by making purposefully exorbitant demands.
The 25-year-old South American forward held talks with the 20-times English champions over the summer – in a contract that would have seen Belgian attacker Romelu Lukaku join the Serie A heavyweights – however, they ultimately withdrew from negotiations.
The Red Devils boss were not convinced that former Palermo man really wanted to play for the team and pulled the plug on a contract, with Romelu Lukaku ultimately joining Serie A champions, Juventus’ direct rivals Inter Milan.
While United supporters may have been disappointed to miss out on world-class no.10 forward, Arsenal legend Wright is certain that the move to Old Trafford would be a mistake and thinks Dybala – who also held talks with Tottenham Hotspur sabotaged talks in order to remain in Serie A and snub interest from Premier League.
‘I think Manchester United would never have a problem attracting people once they want them,’ he told BBC 5 Live.
‘I think Paulo Dybala didn’t want to come here and the demand was just to make sure he didn’t want to come here.
‘I don’t see Paulo Dybala as being the guy at Man United.
‘Getting Paulo Dybala in a makeweight thing for Lukaku, I’m not sure, I don’t think he would’ve been good at United.
‘I think he asked for that kind of money simply because he knew he wouldn’t get it.’
