Frank Lampard has delivered an impassioned defence of Mason Mount by insisting that the playmaker was selected on merit against Man United on Sunday. U21 England international made both his Blues debut and Premier League bow at Old Trafford but endured a difficult afternoon as London club were thrashed 4-0.

The 20-year-old midfielder progressed through the academy at London club and has spent two productive loan spells away from the Stamford Bridge, spending the 2017-18 campaign with Vitesse Arnhem and then last term at Derby County where he worked alongside Lampard.
English starlet was a key part of Derby’s side last campaign, scoring nine goals and providing four assists as they only missed out on promotion to the Premier League following a 2-1 play-off final defeat to Aston Villa.
