Manchester United are set to face heavy competition from city rivals Manchester City in the pursuit of England international Harry Maguire, according to a British tabloid newspaper the Sun, as quoted by Daily Star.
The Leicester City centre-back has emerged as the number one defensive target for Manchester United. But, it is believed that the Citizens are growing seemingly confident that they can hijack the Red Devils’ deal to sign Maguire this summer.
Pep Guardiola’s side could make a last-ditch effort to land the Englishman after their initial bid of £65m was rejected by Leicester City management. Maguire is understood to be valued around £80-90m.
It is quite evident the Citizens require a new centre-hallf this summer, with Laporte and Stones being their only reliable variants going into this new campaign. Maguire, in that regard, could be an ideal fit in central defence alongside Aymeric.
The England international could provide John with some much-needed competition. But, he’ll likely be drafted into the starting XI given the impact he has had for both side and country within the past 12 months.
The Leicester City player is also quite experienced in the English top-flight, which should help him to settle in quickly at either at Old Trafford or Etihad Stadium.
And at the age of 26, Maguire could be a smart long-term investment for the Red Devils and the Citizens.
This would be a wise move from either Pep Guardiola or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer even if the price is on the higher side.
