Dortmund have confirmed the signing of 22-year-old defender Manuel Akanji from Swiss giants Basel on a four-and-a-half-year contract.
The Swiss defender who has been rumoured with a switch to hosts of European clubs including Liverpool and Manchester United will continue his development in Germany and help Borussia Dortmund to improve their defensive end.
Dortmund were always seen as favourites to secure the services of 22-year-old defender. However, the Switzerland international has now officially joined the Westfalenstadion snubbing interest from Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester United.
BVB sporting director Michael Zorc told the club’s official website: “Manuel’s performances put him on the radar of a number of top European clubs, and we’re delighted that he’s chosen to join us.
“He has already demonstrated at international and Champions League level that he can play at the highest level in Europe.”
The 22-year-old centre-back has been a part of Basel’s double-winning side last campaign and reportedly cost Dortmund around £20m to lure him in Bundesliga.
Now Liverpool and Manchester United will have to look elsewhere to strengthen their defensive end, the Merseysiders have already signed Virgil van Dijk in January, while Jose Mourinho’s side yet to make first signing in the winter.
