Chelsea will open negotiations with Freiburg over a deal for their forward Luca Waldschmidt, according to the latest reports.

The 23-year-old has scored six goals in 16 games for the German club this season, but his term has been disrupted by several injuries since October.

At the European U21 Championship the previous summer, Waldschmidt ended as the tournament’s top scorer with 7 goals and was nicknamed ‘Il Bomber’ in reference to Germany great Gerd Muller.

Waldschmidt was subsequently given his senior debut for his country and now has three caps for the national side.

According to The Sun, manager Frank Lampard has been monitoring Luca’s progress and he is keen on signing the forward. The report claims that the Blues will now discuss a £20m deal with Freiburg.

It’s also stated that Chelsea believe Waldschmidt will improve ‘when he learns to use his physique’. Frank was keen to sign a new striker in the January transfer market but Chelsea were unable to secure a deal.

Paris Saint-Germain man Edinson Cavani was one of Lampard’s targets but the Uruguayan preferred a transfer to Atletico Madrid. The Chelsea chief is also set to lose Olivier Giroud at the end of the term as his contract will expire.

In other news, Barcelona are reportedly still interested in selling Chelsea target Philippe Coutinho during this summer’s transfer market.

Barca chief Quique Setien recently suggested that the 27-year-old would be part of his plans for next term, branding the playmaker “a great player”.

However, according to Goal, the Spanish club remain keen on a summer sale in order to fund moves for the likes of Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar.
