Barcelona centre-back Xavier Mbuyamba admits he could be playing for Chelsea this campaign.
Though, as the teen reveals, Chelsea’s transfer ban prevented him from moving to London while still with MVV Maastricht. Instead, he finally joined Barca.
The 17-year-old defender trialled with the Blues and admits he did enough for Chelsea to offer him a deal. But with the club’s transfer ban having been confirmed, the whole deal collapsed.
The suspension handed down by FIFA has meant Chelsea being unable to sign players for the last summer market and the upcoming January transfer window.
“Chelsea wanted to offer me a three-year contract,” Mbuyamba explained to FOX Sports via Voetbalzone. “But the transfer ban prevented me from going there. But there were also many other clubs that wanted me, including Barcelona.”
The youngster came to the attention of Chelsea after making his first-team breakthrough with MVV last season in Holland’s Eerste Division. The stopper made an impressive 11 appearances for the club – including achieving his debut as a 16-year-old.
This season, Mbuyamba is now performing and training for Barca’s Juvenil A team.
He continued, “I live in the La Masia training complex, together with eighty other boys, including basketball players and handball players in addition to football players. It is going well, I have found my way, I train well, and I play well.”
