Ex-Chelsea and Bayern Munich midfielder Michael Ballack has discussed the future of RB Leipzig centre-forward and rumoured Reds transfer target, Timo Werner. Germany international has shone in his time in the Bundesliga and recently signed a new contract with the Red Bulls until 2023, though this will not stop Reds monitoring him.
Liverpool heavily linked with Timo, as well as other big names like Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid, though they also quote Ballack as tipping Bayern Munich to be in for Werner again soon. He joined Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016 with a €14m deal. He became a key figure for the club and scored many important goals over the years.
“He has expressed his gratitude to Leipzig with his contract extension. But I think next year a switch to Bayern could be on again,” Ballack said. This could be bad news for the Reds if their interest in the German centre-forward is strong, with German tactician understandably likely to be keen to snap up one of his country’s biggest talents.
The former Germany international, now a pundit, believes the 23-year-old striker’s new contract may only be an expression of gratitude towards RB Leipzig, and that a move to Bayern still looks likely to be on for him. Timo is a regular member of the national team line-up and also played in the 2018 World Cup.
Liverpool also linked with Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Kai Havertz, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison, Napoli star Fabian Ruiz and Fiorentina attacker Federico Chiesa.
