Reiss Nelson said that David Luiz has been encouraging him to take greater risks in the final third following his first-team breakthrough at London club this campaign. U21 England international started Gunners first two Premier League games of the campaign with Newcastle and Burnley before making way for club-record signing Nicolas Pepe.
Reiss showed flashes of his potential in those first two outings, but he was unable to reward Spanish coach’s show of faith with a goal or assist, missing an excellent opportunity with Burnley. However, Nelson revealed that David Luiz, have advised him not to let his confidence dip if he misses a shot and instead to keep trying to score.
‘It’s a great feeling to have a lot of big characters in the team who are willing to help the youngsters come through and help them do well,’ Reiss said. ‘You see the likes of Laca, Auba and Granit who are all prominent footballers in the club. David is a new addition, and he’s always talking to me, still talking about the mental side of the football.
English starlet has long been regarded as one of Gunners best up-and-coming young footballers and featured 16 times for the London club during Arsene Wenger’s final campaign in 2017-18.
In a bid to accelerate his progress further, Gunners loanee the 19-year-old winger out to Bundesliga club Hoffenheim last term and he enjoyed a productive spell, scoring seven times in 29 matches.
Luiz, meanwhile, was a surprise deadline day signing from Chelsea but he has quickly emerged as a leader of the London club, starting in three of Arsenal’s four Premier League games.
