According to reports from Portugal, Arsenal are interested in Porto midfielder Hector Herrera but face fierce competition from Olympique Lyonnais.
O Jogo is reporting the rumours that the French side are hoping to ‘close’ a deal for Herrera for €30 million, following a conversation with the Porto, club president. However, they’re not the only ones, with American source ESPN in Herrera’s home country of Mexico suggesting that Arsenal are also in for the midfielder.
Hector Herrera is the captain of his current club in Portugal, where he has played since 2013. Now 28 years old, he would make a bit of a strange signing for the Gunners, as he has neither a young talent for the future nor particularly experienced at the very top of European football.
As a player, he’s instrumental in possession, consistently creating chances and passing accurately, as well as helping to win the ball back when his team lose it. However, with the seemingly imminent acquisitions of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi, Arsenal don’t need another central midfielder this summer transfer window.
Perhaps Arsenal are only scouting out some options in case a big club comes in for Aaron Ramsey late in the window.
