Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay the release clause of Sporting Lisbon wonderkid Joelson Fernandes in an effort to beat the likes of Juve and Barcelona for his services.
The 17-year-old is the latest forward to come through Sporting’s academy, which has produced the likes of Ricard Quaresma, Nani and one of the best players of all time Cristiano Ronaldo.
He has trained with the first-team sporadically for over a year and made his senior appearances when the Portuguese league returned to action from the coronavirus pandemic.
Sporting have been keen to try and extend Fernandes’ current contract and plan to double his €45million (£40m).
A Bola claims that several teams, including Arsenal, are now seriously weighing up paying the fee to secure services of Fernandes now before his price get raised.
The Portuguese newspaper claims Arsenal are ready to make £40m offer and the get deal done for the forward.
Fernandes’ agent is Kia Joorabchian, who has developed close ties to the Gunners in recent years could play a vital role in the possible transfer.
Speaking about the speculation surrounding his future earlier this year, Fernandes said: ‘It is very flattering and I think it represents the value of my work.
‘I did not look at that alleged interest very much, I am happy where I am and fighting to achieve my dream, which is to play for Sporting’s first team. Nobody has told me about this extension offer yet. Besides, I try not to think about these things too much. I just want to play football.
