Daily Mail claims that Premier League duo Everton and Arsenal are set to battle it out for the joining of Athletic Bilbao centre-back Unai Nunez.
The 22-year-old Spaniard, who is a Bilbao academy result and performed for their youth teams, is now a Spain international and has caught the interest from two top Premier League clubs. He also represented Spain in U21 Euros and encouraged them to win the competition over the summer.
Nunez’s deal with Bilbao runs until the summer of 2023. While that won’t be a huge issue since the player has a release clause of approximately £30m, other top European clubs are also keeping a close eye on him.
Arsenal have made a nice start to this season, notwithstanding not being solid at the back. Without a doubt, they need more class in the centre-back.
Unai Nunez is a quality defender, who is slowly proving himself as one of the most demanding players across Europe. He favours to operate in central defence but is capable of playing at defensive midfielder or as a right-back.
With 49 La Liga games, Euros U21 star also won a senior international cap last month. That said, the 22-year-old has seen and done things right so far.
In terms of his qualities, he is a physically staunch defender and is aerially prodigious in both boxes. He looks the game well to make defensive interceptions. He also passes the ball better from the back as compared to most of the Gunners centre-backs.
If the Arsenal manage to sign him shortly, they would have a defender who can follow to Unai Emery’s philosophies of playing out from the back and do it with better results.
