Henrikh Mkhitaryan admits a lack of game time at Arsenal forced him to think about a last-minute loan move to AS Roma.
The Armenian star was signed in January 2018 by the French manager Arsene Wenger as a replacement for Chile international Alexis Sanchez who swapped the Emirates Stadium for Old Trafford.
After creating three goals on his debut, Henrikh’s form dipped alarmingly and the player struggled to cement a regular place in manager Unai Emery’s team last campaign.
The 30-year-old star did make three appearances this campaign, the most recent of which came as a substitute in last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur but was deemed surplus to requirements by Unai.
And with Nicolas Pepe adding to the Gunners’ options out wide, Henrikh jumped at the opportunity to join Giallorossi on transfer deadline day.
‘Everything happened in the last day right after the Tottenham game I got a call from my agent,’ the former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United player said ahead of Armenia’s match versus Italy.
‘He told me that I have to fly to Rome the next day to have a medical with the team and also sign a contract. It is a great opportunity for me as I didn’t get a lot of playing time.’
Meantime, Arsenal approached Real Madrid during the summer transfer market to enquire about the availability of Brazilian ace Vinicius Junior, according to UOL.
The forward, who was also linked with PSG as a potential makeweight in his compatriot Neymar deal, has featured in all three of Los Blancos’ games at the start of the 2019-20 La Liga term.
