Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has revealed that the Premier League giants offered him a new contract, however, he turned it down as he knew he could not dislodge Brazilian-born midfielder Jorginho from the starting XI.

The Spanish playmaker has swapped Stamford Bridge for Ligue 1 giants AS Monaco during the January transfer window, ending his four-and-a-half-year stint at the West London club.

The 31-year-old midfielder has started just one Premier League game under Italian head-coach Maurizio Sarri, a 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers back in December, with Jorginho instead being preferred at the midfield option.

Speaking at AS Monaco press conference on Friday, Fabregas has suggested that Italy international, midfielder, Jorginho’s summer arrival was part of the reason why he called it quits at Chelsea.

“I was at Chelsea, and I could have renewed my contract to stay there,” he said. “A new coach came, and he came with a player that, for him, was like his son.

“For me, it was difficult to play every single game – this is what I want to do. I love football. When I played for Chelsea, I’m happy [but] it was impossible to play every match – for whatever reason it was.”

Former Barcelona midfielder has made 12 appearences for AS Monaco since joining them three months ago, helping the team to climb out of the relegation zone.
