Philippe Coutinho wanted to make a return to Liverpool before completing his move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, according to the reports.

The Catalan club were open to selling the Brazil midfielder this summer, however, he has now joined German champions on a season-long loan, while the Bavarians have the option to buy him for €120 million (£109.8m).

The Brazil international midfielder was strongly linked with a return to the English top-tier with Tottenham, Man United, and Arsenal all reportedly interested in a deal.

However, according to The Athletic, Brazilian midfielders representatives ‘made it clear’ to the Reds that he would prefer to make a move back to Anfield.

However, the report claims that the Merseyside Reds were not interested in a loan deal for the Brazilian.

Jurgen Klopp is also believed to have privately concluded that Brazilian playmaker would not dramatically improve his team, while he is also happy with his teams attacking potential.

Klopp, meanwhile, has revealed that the move was too costly for the Merseyside Reds.

‘It sounds a bit strange, but we could not afford it [to sign Coutinho], we have already spent the cash that we got for him,’ he told Goal.

‘We were reluctant to hand him over, but Barcelona forced us with money, so to speak.

‘The move makes sense for both sides. He’s a super player and a great boy. He is a world-class footballer who can change games in the right environment.’
