Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed how his ex-team was on the verge to sign Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard Before Belgian forward making switch to Stamford Bridge.
Redknapp appeared on BT Sport on Saturday evening has revealed that he has been close to signing Samuel Eto and Eden Hazard.
The ex-Spurs boss has met with Hazard in a hotel room in France while Belgian forward performed for Lille, and tried to convince him to make a switch to White Hard Lane.
The Lilywhites made Hazard as their top transfer target back in 2012 as they seemingly heading for the Champions League and Redknapp though that the deal with possible.
The defending Premier League champions, however, eventually took Spurs’ spot in Europe after beating Bayern Munich in the series of penalties and Hazard made £32m switch to the Stamford Bridge side.
“Went to France, met him [Hazard] in a hotel room, three hours I was with him. That’s probably why he didn’t sign!” joked Redknapp.
“Yeah, we could’ve had him at the time, at Tottenham. I’d have loved him. Joe Cole told me he’s the best player he’s ever played with [at Lille]. We wanted him, and then obviously, the club didn’t get the deal done. For whatever reason, I left it to the powers that be to buy him, and it didn’t get pushed over the line.”
