Jose Mourinho has once again sent scouts to watch Benfica as he continues to monitor a number of Portuguese talents ahead of the January transfer window.

The 54-year-old has already signed Victor Lindelof from the Portuguese champions for a fee of £31m over the summer but the defender has struggled to make an impact during the early stages of his Old Trafford career.

Man United will also face Benfica in the Champions League group stages this season, taking on Rui Vitoria’s side in back to back clashes next month.

And it has been confirmed by Tom Kundert that United were among a series of clubs keeping an eye on Benfica’s Portuguese talents during a 2-1 home win over Portimonense.

Mourinho could have set this trip in motion purely for the purpose of analysing an upcoming opponent, but you sense that, just like with Manchester City’s draw with Everton, he would have attended the game himself. He is, after all, an extremely hands on worker.

Benfica have been an established conveyor belt of young talent for some time. The Portuguese was in Valencia last month to watch defender Ezequiel Garay, who enjoyed some of his best years in Lisbon, ahead of a potential January bid and there is clearly something there currently piquing his interest.
