Arsenal former striker Charlie Nicholas urged Arsene Wenger to sign a “big-name” centre-back like Raphael Varane, this summer to compete for Premier League title next season.
The 24-year-old Real Madrid defender has been linked with the move to Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Chelsea nd Man Utd in the recent years, after establishing himself as one of the best defenders in Europe.
The Gunners could do with strengthening at the back after finishing 2016/17 season on the fifth place; It happened first time in the last 21 years when Arsenal finished campaign outside the top-four.
France international defender would surely be an upgrade on the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding, and former Arsenal forward Nicholas urged his old club to sign a top-class centre-back like Varane.
‘Arsene needs three signings in my opinion,’ Nicholas said.
‘He needs another big-name centre-back, someone like Raphael Varane. He has spent big money, so I’m not critical that he isn’t prepared to do that.’
Meanwhile, Arsenal have also been linked with Serie A giants Roma centre-back Kostas Manola, and if they don’t make an approach for Varane, Wenger could try and lure Greek international star at Emirates Stadium.
The 67-year-old French manager has already completed his first summer signing by luring Schalke 04 left-back Sead Kolasinac in London last week.
