Chelsea will face competition from Liverpool in the race for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, according to reports
The Senegalese international has made 81 appearances for Italian club since making his debut for the Serie A side back in 2014 but powerful centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League since last summer.
Southampton and Holland star Virgil Van Dijk has long been mooted as a target for Liverpool and Chelsea, but the links to the excellent Koulibaly are new…
The Blues have been heavily linked with Napoli man, but now Goal suggests they may come up against competition from the Merseyside club for the 25-year-old defender at the end of the season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side on the hunt for defensive reinforcements.
After years of problems at the back, Liverpool moved to bring in centre backs Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan from Schalke and Augsburg respectively last summer, but Klopp may still want another centre back.
With Mamadou Sakho completely frozen out at Anfield, the France international has been loaned out to Crystal Palace, where his impressive performances appear to be attracting interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, now with John Terry finally set to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, it’s believed that Koulibaly is firmly at the top of Chelsea’s wish-list.
The Senegalese star is one of the better defenders in the Italy’s top flight and he is known for his ability to pass from the back while also being a no-nonsense tackler; something that the Premier League giants could do with next season.
The report in Goal adds that Napoli want around £60million from Liverpool or Chelsea for Koulibaly which could put off interested clubs.
