Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger has earmarked Schalke ace Max Meyer as the main target for the next summer.

The Schalke and Germany national team midfielder can play in a variety position: as an attacking midfielder or forward, or even as a deep-lying playmaker.

The 22-year-old midfielder is out of contract with Schalke at the end of the current campaign and Arsenal are set to face stiff competition for his signature from their Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently searching a replacement for Philippe Coutinho who has made January move to Barcelona.

But it is believed that Wenger is already working hard on persuading Meyer and trying to use Ozil’s influence on young German midfielder in order to lure him at Emirates Stadium.

Hopes of landing German starlet were boosted last month after Schalke CEO Christian Heidel refused to rule out the summer exit of Max Meyer.

He said: “Max will be deciding shortly if he wants to stay at Schalke past the summer.

“Max is very happy here, Schalke is his home, we will try to make it him as comfortable financially as possible.

“He is playing the best season of his life, and the coach has found a position for him that Max didn’t believe he could play.

“Personally, I didn’t think he could either.”
