Scouts from the Premier League heavyweights have watched McCarthy extensively this campaign as both clubs look to strengthen their options in the goal for the next season.

The Gunners are looking a replacement for Petr Cech, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is on the lookout for a new stopper with Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet often failing to impress.

McCarthy, who joined the Saints in 2016 in a £3.5million deal from their Premier League rivals Crystal Palace has started the current season in the Saints reserves, playing back-up to Fraser Forster. however, since the Christmas, he has been more regular for Mark Hughes side.

Newly-promoted Wolves are also interested in signing of McCarthy, but Liverpool and Arsenal are favourites to secure his services.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are also keeping tabs on Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland who is also believed on the shortlist of Arsenal.
