According to the Calciomercato reports, Arsenal were on the verge to offload Olivier Giroud to Napoli in the summer as part of a potential deal to bring South American striker Gonzalo Higuain to the Emirates Stadium in order to strengthen attacking options.
Arsene Wenger has also missed with signing England international forward Jamie Vardy and prolific striker Alexandre Lacazette and Frenchman ended up with signing Deportivo La Coruna centre-forward Lucas Perez.
However, with Alexis Sanchez evolving into a multi-faceted frontman in a new number nine role while Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil have chipped in impressively from nominally deeper positions.
According to Calciomercato, Gonzalo Higuain was Close to Emirates move after Gunners offered £50 million with Giroud (below) thrown into the bargain, however, the deal has been stalled and South American forward ended with signing for Napoli’s rivals Juventus.
And, despite Giroud recovering from injury to net with both his first two touches against Sunderland on Saturday lunchtime, the fans could be forgiven for once again wondering why a club on such a sound financial footing as Arsenal can fail to tie up a deal.
